Gearing up for World No Tobacco Day 2010



The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2010 is “Gender and tobacco with an emphasis on marketing to women”, and activities will be designed to draw particular attention to the harmful effects of tobacco marketing towards women and girls. May 31 is fast approaching, and we encourage you to start preparing your activities for this year. To get started, you can:

  • download and distribute the images and information from WHO’s website in the months leading up to World No Tobacco Day;
  • send the GSP your resources on women/gender and smokefree policy to include in our materials clearinghouse

Global Smokefree Partnership announces the 2009 GSP Award Winners

The Global Smokefree Partnership is proud to announce the winners of the 2009 GSP Awards. The awards are given to individuals and organizations from around the world to recognize their outstanding leadership and excellence in promoting effective smokefree policies, and to encourage further action to promote smokefree policies. This year’s awardees are:

Shri Murli S. Deora, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas – for his exceptional leadership and commitment to further smokefree policies in India

Davao Anti-Smoking Task Force – for exceptional leadership and commitment to further smokefree policies in Davao City, Philippines

Una Voz Contra el Cancer and Dora Oliva – for outstanding, sustained action to promote smokefree policies in Guatemala by a non-governmental organisation or alliance

Turkish National Coalition on Smoking or Health – for exceptional and outstanding commitment to promote smokefree legislation in Turkey in order to facilitate the implementation of Article 8 of the FCTC

Multiple sectors, Colombia – for exceptional and outstanding commitment to promote smokefree legislation in Colombia in order to facilitate the implementation of Article 8 of the FCTC.

Government – Executive branch: Carlos Ignacio Cuervo, Vice Minister of Health and Social Protection

Government – Legislative branch: Senadora Dilian Francisca Toro, Senador David Name

Government Agency: Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia

Medical sector: Sociedad Colombiana del Cardiologia

Civil Society:

  • Corporate Accountability International (CAI)
  • ASOBARES (Bogota’s Bar association)
  • Liga Colombiana Contra el Cancer
  • The Colombian public, who supported and complied with the smoke-free decree

The awards will be presented at two international events at the end of February:

  • Regional Workshop for the Southeast Asia and Western Pacific Regions on the Implementation of the FCTC, in Singapore, on 22 February; and
  • 10th annual meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, in Baltimore, Maryland, on 25 February

WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, 2008: The MPOWER package

On 9 December 2009, the World Health Organization released its WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, 2009. This year’s report focuses on Article 8 of the FCTC, and highlights the success of seven countries that implemented comprehensive smokefree policies in 2008.


Lessons Learned Globally

In January 2010, the Global Dialogue for Effective Stop Smoking Campaigns released a report synthesizing data from secondhand smoke campaigns around the world. The report, which includes 35 case studies on 16 different countries’ campaigns, provides lessons learned about the process and content of developing and implementing mass media campaigns on smokefree air.
