Status Report on Article 8 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
In November 2008, the Global Smokefree Partnership launched its Status Report on Article 8 of the FCTC at the 3rd session of the Conference of the Parties to the FCTC. The report's release comes a little over one year after guidelines for Article 8 of the FCTC were adopted by the Parties to the FCTC in July 2007.
Status Report on Article 8 of the FCTC documents the implementation of the Article 8 guidelines; identifies needs and challenges in progress with implementation (such as lack of resources and technical expertise); and provides recommendations for those countries that do not yet measure up.
Status Report on Article 8 of the FCTC is a call to action for governments to protect people from secondhand smoke by providing positive examples of good practice and illustrating where guideline-standard legislation is working. By telling the story of Article 8 and the success in using the guidelines to protect public health, the report can be used to help support the case for adoption of strong guidelines for other provisions in the FCTC.
